Reducing the impact of shipping on Orca whales in the Pacific

Port of Vancouver Echo Program logo

In 2022, Berge Bulk signed up to participate in the ECHO programme. The ECHO (Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation) programme is an initiative, by the Port of Vancouver, for vessels to slow down in certain marine protected areas to reduce underwater noise pollution.

Underwater noise pollution is a threat to the native Orca whales, as it interferes with their ability to hunt, navigate, and communicate.

A Voluntary Programme

To participate in this voluntary programme, Berge Bulk vessels calling port in Vancouver must slow down to 11 knots, or less, when travelling via the Haro Strait and Swiftsure Bank at certain times of the year. When passing through these designated areas, the Vancouver Port Authorities contact our vessel masters to confirm the intention to reduce speed. Upon receiving the request, vessel masters then confirm their intention to keep within the limit. Speed information is also collected automatically via the Automatic Identification System.
