Fighting Food Waste
- Our Ambitions…
- Achieve a 10% reduction in average food waste per ship by 2025 (vs 2021 baseline).
- Achieved in 2022…
- ON TRACK — we reduced our food waste per vessel by 5% (vs 2021 baseline).
Another type of waste that we are closely monitoring, and actively working to reduce, is food waste. With a crew of 20+ people eating three meals per day on board each of our vessels, we prepare and serve nearly 2 million meals every year. We recognise that we have a clear opportunity to make a difference in this area.
We have identified four leading causes of food waste onboard our vessels, and each cause needs to be treated with a unique remedy.
Raising Awareness Among Our Crew…
In order to understand which Berge Bulk vessels are managing food waste well, and which vessels need more support, the Chief Cook and Messman on board each ship are required to measure and report their monthly food waste. The data gathered is used to give each vessel in the fleet an appropriate food waste reduction target, on an individual basis.
To incentivise improvement, we give special recognition every month to the Chief Cooks and Messmen on board the top 5 best performing vessels.
The graph below shows how our food waste per vessel has been reducing since this tracking process began in 2017.
